Hai Lil stars for Greta West Stud
Wednesday, 20 February 2013

Greta West Stud has another potential star among its list of graduates in Victoria.

Promising filly Hai Lil looked a filly with a future in the Art Series Hotel Group Hcp (1600m) at Moonee Valley last Friday night.

The Bendigo based filly hit the line hard in a performance that would have pleased trainer Allen Browell.  She defeated Scarletini by half a length and they streeted the rest by four lengths.

Hai Lil (3f Churchill Downs - Smooth As Silk by Barathea) captured her maiden with a powerful finish at Echuca in June 2012.  She returned from a long spell to win again at Echuca in January and followed up with a desperately unlucky neck second to Winta Chiller at Caulfield before making amends at the Valley.

Greta West studmaster Laurie McCarthy purchased her dam Smooth As Silk from Widden Stud in 2004 and sold Hai Lil for $60,000 at the 2011 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.

Browell also races her older half-brother Our Inheritance who is by Greta West sire King of Prussia.  He has won 6 races to date, including a Moonee Valley sprint, for Browell’s wife Val along with stable clients Kate Glass and Horrie West.

Classy galloper Two Hills (Hillman) is also ready to win for the same connections.  The Greta West bred mare was a $9,000 buy at the 2007 Inglis Melbourne Autumn yearling sale and has now banked over $358,000.

King of Prussia gelding Frozen Rope continued his rise up with ranks with a gutsy victory in the Might And Power Hcp (1800m) at Rosehill on Saturday.  He was headed clearly at the furlong by Carry Me Bluey but fought back to score by a half-length.

“There are still a few chinks in his armour,” trainer Adam Duggan said.  “But that a good thing because there’s still improvement to come.  The owners are talking about running him in the Doncaster Hcp but that might be flying a bit high and the timing isn’t quite right, either.

“But we may look at a winter carnival campaign in Queensland.”

Frozen Rope (5g King Of Prussia Timor Flyer by Azzaam) was born and raised at Greta West.  He was educated by Tal Nolen at Benalla before making his way to Duggan’s stables on the NSW Central Coast.

Duggan also prepares his unraced younger sister for owner-breeder Gary Begg.  She has been named The Ropes Sister!

Prussian Secret completed a Greta West hat-trick in the Maclean Bowling Club Hcp (1100m) at Grafton on Monday.  He came from last with a brilliant burst to score by a short head.

Prussian Secret (8g King Of Prussia Let’s Remember by Almaarad) was asked to shoulder 64kg before the claim of apprentice Kassie Furness.  He has won 14 races and $250,000 including victories in the Guyra, Gunnedah, Armidale, Coonamble, Quirindi and Wellington Cups in NSW and the Mackay Cup in Queensland.

He has earned $250,000 for part-owners Cody Morgan and Leon Davies after they bought him as an untried three year-old for $7,000.

Prussian Secret’s older brother Prussian Officer won has four races in Melbourne up to 2500m and he was also runner-up in last year’s LR Bagot Hcp at Flemington.

Their younger brother Mr Jazz is also heading in the right direction for part-owner and breeder Adam Trescowthick.  He came from the clouds to win a Seymour maiden earlier this month and will be gunning for a running double at Kilmore this Sunday.

Greta West stands King Of Prussia (Anabaa) for a $2,750 (inc gst) fee alongside Keep The Faith (Sunday Silence) who is priced at $4,400 (inc gst).
